In Islam, performing the obligatory prayers, known as Salah, is one of the fundamental acts of worship. It is incumbent upon every adult Muslim to offer their daily prayers at their designated times. However, there are times when one may miss a prayer due to various reasons, including sleep or forgetfulness. By the grace of God, we are given the chance to make up for this lost prayer(s) in the form of “Qaza” (or Qada) Namaz.

In this article, we will focus on how to pray Qaza namaz for Zuhr, in the event that the Farz Zuhr Namaz was missed.

What is Qaza Namaz?

Qaza namaz refers to the act of making up for missed or forgotten obligatory prayers. These are the five daily Salah (Namaz) that Muslims are required to perform at specific times throughout the day and night. If a person fails to offer a prayer within its designated time frame, they must make amends by performing the missed prayer later when they remember or have the opportunity to do so.

There is no fixed restriction on when Qaza Namaz should be prayed, and it can even be prayed the next day (e.g. if you slept throughout the night, and missed fajr namaz). However, it is recommended that Qaza Namaz be prayed as soon as one remembers.

Abu Qatadah narrated:

“They asked the Prophet about when they sIept past the Salat. He said: ‘There is no negligence in sleep, negligence is only while one is awake. So when one of you forgets a Salat, or sleeps through it, then let him pray it when he remembers it.'”

How to Pray Qaza namaz for Zuhr

Qaza Prayer must be carried out in the exact manner as the missed prayer. In the case of Zuhr, there are 4 Rakats of Farz prayer. Thus, the Qaza for Zuhr is also a total of 4 Rakats. There is no Qaza namaz for the Sunnat (Ghair Muakkadah and Muakkadah) that accompanies Zuhr prayer.

It is also important to note, that while Qaza for Zuhr can be prayed at any time throughout the day, it cannot be prayed during any of the three prohibited times listed below:

  1. The time of the rising of the sun till it has risen high in the sky (Sunrise time, after Fajr).
  2. The time when the sun is at the zenith till it moves down (Zenith, before Zuhr prayer).
  3. The time in the evening when the sun has turned yellow till it sets (Sundown, between Asr and Maghrib).

These three times apply to all kinds of prayer, including Farz, Nafl, Sunnah, and Qaza.

Qaza Prayer will also be performed in the same way as Zuhr Prayer, the only difference being in your Niyat (you should have the intention of performing the 4 Rakats of the missed Zuhr prayer). There is no other difference in the contents of the prayer, or the way that it is to be performed.
